Drawing with the Renaissance Masters

  • Art League School VA, Madison Street Annex 305 Madison Street Alexandria, VA, 22314 United States (map)

Taught in person at the Art League School in historic Old Town Alexandria, VA. Join me for a weekend of drawing the human figure.

In this two-day workshop participants use celebrated works from the Renaissance Masters (paintings, drawings, sculpture), together with a live model, in order to develop our conceptual and observational understanding of form, structure, and morphology. The aim of this workshop is not so much to copy these works, but to be inspired by their poses, techniques, and study of form to create new drawings that are influenced by (e.g.) Raphael, Michelangelo or del Sarto.

Participants concentrate on four poses over the course of the workshop. For each pose, students analyze the master reference (i.e. look at how to draw the structure and forms by breaking down the pose as rendered by the master artist) and a model who assumes the same pose. This enables participants to not only better understand a classic work of art, but also to enrich their own drawings of the human figure by learning from the greatest!
